It has been fun writing these advent posts since the start of December, sharing some of my work and showcasing the work of other indie authors. I hope you have enjoyed reading the posts and maybe have even bought a book here and there, if it has captured your imagination and interest. But now I write the last post as it is Christmas Eve - a night when magic is in the air. Even now, with our children all grown up, I still feel a certain energy as we get the stockings out, prepare tomorrow’s vegetables, cook the ham and start laying out the little decorations for the Christmas table. I guess it’s about anticipation and a wish to make the day special, to join together as a family and celebrate, raise a glass to those we’ve lost or who cannot join us for other reasons.
Now that our children are grown and their partners join us in our celebrations, it is certainly interesting as we find ourselves explaining some of the weird and more unusual traditions that we have adopted over the years.
A treasure hunt that sees out children running up and down the stairs, out to the end of the garden and even beyond - one year having to walk down the road to find a clue taped to a lamp-post on the roundabout.
Deciding who would get the 'arse potato' dished up - the one that had been cooked inside the turkey at Nan's house.
Distant memories of my Dad 'finding' all sorts of interesting objects inside his Christmas Pudding - a stopwatch for instance, whilst everyone else had their coins.
My husband wrapping up the whole Christmas tree one year to surprise the kids.
The 'Honnor Christmas Fairy' leaving glitter on the stairs, showing the way to the presents pile.
Whatever the finer details of your Christmas may be, I hope they bring some joy, smiles, laughter and a little hope for further adventures. This is a poem that I wrote a few years ago but the message is still relevant, so I post it here and wish you all a very Merry Christmas.
Now I'm off to spread some sparkle as I take on my responsibilities as the Honnor Christmas Fairy...
